The luxury of a good night’s rest is something that cannot be taken for granted. Sure, you may think that sleep is just sleep. But, in reality, there’s so much more to getting a few winks. It’s one of the most important things you can do for your body.

When a person is asleep, that is when their body is at work trying to recover from the day’s events. You probably already know that lack of sleep will give you dark circles under your eyes, but do you know it can affect your hair health as well?

Hair Loss

Not getting enough sleep can have a huge effect on your hair. Specifically, prolonged lack of sleep, can cause hair loss. The hours that you are resting is the time that your body goes into repair mode. That means that all the toxins and dead cells will be removed from the body and new cells will be generated.

Generating healthy new cells is crucial to grow new hair follicles. When you don’t get enough sleep, you might notice more falling hair than usual.

Dullness

Long shiny hair is a sign of a healthy body. When you don’t get the recommended hours of rest on a daily basis, your body will be stressed out.

Being in a state of stress can wreak havoc on your personal appearance. Your skin and your hair will be dull. You won’t have a bright and happy complexion, and this will be reflected in the appearance of your hair strands. You will notice that it loses its sheen.

Flatness

You can say goodbye to thick, bouncy locks if you are not getting adequate rest. Constantly missing out on the proper amount of rest that your body needs will result in a weakened immune system that is unable to absorb nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

The lack of these nutrients will have an effect on your hair volume. You will see that your hair is very flat and dull and, overall, just not nice to look at.

Greasiness

Yes, you read that right. Greasy, gross hair will be the result of not sleeping well. As mentioned above, lack of sleep results in a stressed out state of the body. When you are stressed, your body will increase production of the stress hormone, cortisol. More cortisol coursing through your body means that there will be more oil production by the sebaceous glands.

There are sebaceous glands under the scalp, and that is why you will have greasy, oil hair if you don’t get enough rest.

Your hair says a lot about you. The way you style it, color it, and treat it can give insight into the type of person you are. Take pride in your appearance. Take care of your body. Get enough sleep each night. Allow your body to repair and regenerate all the new cells you need to stay healthy. Make sure you get adequate rest to ensure that your hair and the rest of your body will always look good.
